Parramatta, known to the locals as ‘Parra’, is the largest Western City in the greater Sydney area. It is located on the banks of the Parramatta River, which feeds Sydney Harbour fresh water, collected from Toongabbie Creek.
The city has grown to such size that is has become Sydney’s second central business district. It is also the location of Westfields Parramatta which is the largest shopping centre in Australia.
Although only 23 kilometres from the downtown area, the amount of population that commute in an out of this area means that the drive can take up to 2 hours in heavy ‘rush hour’ traffic. Locals tend to be very passionate about their city and sports teams, with the NRL team the Parramatta Eels having one of the most parochial fan basses in the game.
