Bega is one of the few places in Australia that you can be surfing off the coast and within 2.5 hours, be skiing down snow covered alps. Located on the Sapphire Coast, it is a rural farming community, primarily dairy, and home to the famous Bega Cheese and Grevillea Winery … because everyone knows wine and cheese go together!
The area was not always a thriving community, mainly due to the poor road conditions that existed during it’s settlement in the early 1800’s. In fact, so bad were the roads in and out of the main hub, its was not until the wharf was built in 1862 that local produce could be transported up to the Sydney markets. On the back of this, the area also opened up to independent farmers and the production and population both set to rise.
Today there is a lot to see and do in Bega, much that represents the history of the town, including the Bega Family Museum as well as other historic buildings and church’s.
Plan your time in the area before you travel by visiting Sapphire Coast Tourism.
