With a population of approximately 25,000 residents, Devonport is based on the Mersey River and also port for the Bass Straight passenger and vehicle ferries that operate between Tasmania and Melbourne on the mainland.

The Mersey/Forth Valley is also responsible for producing about 40% of all tasmania’s fresh vegetable crop. A seaside town that is shadowed by lush green mountain sides, its quite lifestyle is only briefly interrupted by the comings and goings of visitors using the ferry service.

With many local tours and scenic walks on offer, it is worth spending a day or two in the area to experience the friendly local hospitality at many of the hotels, pubs, cafes or restaurants.
