The Gladstone Region includes the Southern Great Barrier Reef Shire of Miriam Vale, the hinterland of the Banana Shire to the west, the agricultural area of Calliope Shire and the major residential area of Gladstone City.

Gladstone was originally named Port Curtis when first discovered by Flinders. Its natural deep water harbour is sheltered by 2 islands, Facing and Curtis. The main transformation came to Gladstone in the 1960’s when industry boomed with the Alumina Refinery and Power Station attracting new residents to the area.

Gladstone has frequently won ‘Queensland’s Tidiest Town’ award and its growing popularity amongst tourists to the region has seem continued and steady growth over recent years.

The three shire councils, together with the Gladstone City Council are determined to put themselves clearly on the map with their slogan ‘The Engine Room of Industry’. More information can be found through Gladstone Region website.
