Kangaroo Island is not just a remote and barren rock off the southern coast of South Australia. It is an Island steeped in history, including the fact it was the State’s first European Settlement. Hope Cottage Folk Museum is built around one of the historic homesteads that was originally built in 1850.

Emu ridge, once supporting 48 Eucalyptus Distilleries is now the site of South Australia’s only remaining one, which is full self proficient using both wind and solar power.

It is commonly believed that 16,000 years ago the Aboriginal people lived on the Island before the rising ocean levels separated it from the mainland, approx 2,000 years ago. Mystery surrounds how they left the Island or if the even did as the indigenous term for the Island translates as “Land of the Dead”.
