Coastal Drives, Mountain Roads, and World-Class Wine Regions
Victoria is Australia’s second smallest state by land area, yet it offers some of the most diverse and iconic road trip experiences in the country. Victoria is situated at the southern end of the eastern seaboard and is home to everything from rugged surf beaches and alpine ranges to rolling vineyards and thriving cultural hubs.
The capital city, Melbourne, sits on the banks of the Yarra River and serves as a central gateway to many of the state’s top destinations. Whether you’re driving west to experience the world-famous Great Ocean Road, or heading east to explore the Gippsland Lakes, Yarra Valley, or High Country, Victoria is ideal for road travellers.
Driving Conditions and Safety in Victoria
Victoria has a modern road network with well-maintained highways, regional routes, and alpine roads. However, weather patterns and varying terrain mean drivers should stay alert and plan their journeys with care.
Important things to consider when driving in Victoria:
- Melbourne traffic can be heavy during peak hours, and many central city streets have trams. Always give way to trams and avoid stopping on tram tracks.
- Hook turns exist at some Melbourne intersections, requiring vehicles to turn right from the left lane. These are unique to Melbourne and clearly signposted.
- Toll roads are used around Melbourne, including CityLink and EastLink. These are fully electronic, so ensure your vehicle has a valid toll pass.
- Weather conditions can change quickly, especially in mountainous areas. Snow chains may be required in alpine regions during winter.
- Regional roads can be narrow and winding. Wildlife such as kangaroos and wombats are common, especially in the early morning or at night.
- Speed limits in built-up areas are usually 50 km/h unless signed otherwise, with highways ranging from 100 to 110 km/h.
