With its sun-soaked beaches and rooftop bars, we’d forgive you for thinking the Gold Coast is a ‘summer-only’ destination. However, come the colder months, this East Coast hot-spot has just as much to offer.
Here are some of the fun things you can get involved with during winter on the Gold Coast.
1. Discover the area’s awesome mountain trails
During the summer months, the Gold Coast regularly basks in temperatures in the 21 – 28 degree Celsius range, making hiking nearby trails an incredibly sweaty and arduous task.
Of the tracks on offer, Mount Warning is one of the most popular, especially during sunrise, as it’s the first place in Australia where day breaks.
Thankfully, not only do temperatures drop to more comfortable levels (13-21 degrees Celsius) during the winter months, sunrise comes later (6:30.am.), meaning that hikers can catch outstanding vistas without the early wake up call!
This 8.8 kilometre return hike takes visitors through lush rainforest before a slightly steep rock scramble to the summit. At the top, reap the rewards of your labour with coastal views of Byron Bay and the Gold Coast as the sun slowly rises above the rolling hills and pastures.
Best part is, Mount Warning is only a one-hour drive from the Gold Coast!
2. See one of the world’s biggest mammals in its natural habitat
Winter in the Gold Coast marks the beginning of the humpback whale migration. From June to October, visitors to the GC can embark on certified whale watching tours to see these incredible mammals on their journey to warmer waters.
Whales in Paradise is just one of many tour companies that provide daily cruises on the Gold Coast, with a money-back guarantee if you don’t spot any whales on your trip. But don’t worry, they currently maintain a 100 per cent sighting record! Tours are intimate and boats are smaller so that all passengers can enjoy rail-side views of the humpbacks and other marine life that may reveal itself.

3. Feel the music at Viva Surfers Paradise
Don your blue suede shoes and practise your lip curl as Elvis and the gang are coming to the Gold Coast! That’s right, from July 13-22 locals and visitors alike can enjoy a programme of ticketed and free music events at Viva Surfers Paradise. As the largest tribute artist festival in Australasia, there’s no shortage of talent on these stages. From Mr Presley himself to the Beatles, have a swinging old time singing and dancing along to some of the world’s greatest music legends.

4. Immerse yourself in the winter market magic
There’s nothing like a little community spirit to warm the cockles, and if there’s incredible food, home wares and drinks on offer too, the experience is even better! This winter, be sure to visit one of the Gold Coast’s markets to pick up some treasures and try some local delicacies.
Bundall Farmers’ Market, Surfers Paradise Beachfront Markets and The Village Markets are just three to put in your diary.
