Brisbane has a lot of fascinating suburbs, but few have quite the same ‘character’ that Fortitude Valley can boast. Located in a prime position, less than a kilometre from the CBD, Fortitude Valley has gone through multiple phases over the last few decades. It’s made the switch from retail hub to nightlife hotspot and then to today’s status as one of Australia’s hippest areas. Remnants from each of the suburb’s different stages of life can still be seen and experienced today – making the Valley (as it’s affectionately known), one of the coolest places to visit in Queensland.

If you’re staying for a few days, Fortitude Valley is a a great place to be based in while you explore the city and surrounding areas, and best of all you can pick up your rental car right in the centre of the action. In this article we’ll run through some of the Valley’s highlights, ranging from boutique shopping through to delicious food.

You’re well catered too with a multicultural Pandora’s Box of options waiting for you.

Shopping on Brunswick Street

The beating heart of Fortitude Valley is Brunswick Street, a mecca for hipsters and families with children alike. No matter what you’re into, you’re sure to find the perfect set of threads in one of the many indie boutiques located along this stretch of road. There are too many highlights to name, but if we had to choose one, Fallow at number 354 would be it. Considered one of the best places to pick up clothing and accessories for men and women, it’s an essential stop on any stroll down Brunswick.

Of course, all that shopping can make you a tad peckish, but you’re well catered to with a multicultural Pandora’s Box of options waiting for you on the main street and nearby. Whether you’re in the mood for Mexican or Chinese, you’ll be sure to find somewhere to satisfy that craving.

A day at the Fortitude Valley Markets

As one of Brisbane’s coolest suburbs, it’s no real surprise that the Valley is home to one of the city’s oldest and most popular markets. Held every Saturday from 9 am to 4 pm, the Fortitude Valley Markets have been a staple of the neighbourhood for more than 20 years, and you never know what you might find.

Obviously there’s plenty of clothing on offer, but the area’s many artists and designers also have their wares on display – many of these bespoke or one of a kind. To top it all off, there’s often live music, so all in all a fantastic day out and a great addition to any visit to Brisbane.
