Man Holding Blonde Woman Next to a Car and Lake Bumbunga

Get inspired this Valentine’s Day with our top romantic drives covering every state in Australia. It’s no secret we love road trips, but we’re hard pressed to think of anything more romantic than escaping the city and venturing out onto the open road with your sweetheart in the passenger seat. We give you our list of the most loved-up drives in Australia starting from the top in alphabetical order.

Australian Capital Territory

• Kangaroo Valley and Jervis Bay

Take the two-hour trip in your hire car from Canberra to Kangaroo Valley, one of the most spectacular scenic drives in all of Australia. You will feel like you have been sent back in time to medieval England as you make your way through the dramatic towers of Hampden Bridge crossing the Kangaroo River and into the village. Explore the local township with your amour with its hidden tea rooms, delectable pies or hire a canoe for a gentle cruise on the river winding its way through untouched wilderness. Take the extra one-hour journey south to Jervis Bay, home to some of the whitest sand on earth at Hyam’s Beach. This busy coastal town is the perfect spot to settle down for the night and start the next day with a dolphin cruise or sea-kayak tour.

• Maleny

Just a short 45-minutre trip from our Sunshine Coast location will bring you to the picture-perfect village of Maleny. This quiet town nestled in the hinterland is the ideal getaway for couples seeking solitude. We recommend a visit to Maleny’s best kept secret, the privately-owned botanic gardens – 18 acres of beautifully sculpted gardens set on a 110-acre property overlooking the Glass House Mountains. Stroll among the waterfalls, ponds and colourful flowers or seek some quiet in one of the 18 gazebos scattered throughout the gardens. They also cater to weddings, so maybe an impromptu “I do” could be on the cards… hint, hint.

New South Wales

• Hunter Valley

Valentine’s Day and wine inevitably go hand-in-hand, so it’s hard to surpass the Hunter Valley only three hours away from our Sydney Airport location. Design your own self-guided tour (sober drivers only please!) or book a personal gourmet cooking class and wine matching tour for an intimate experience. The Hunter Valley has more cellar doors than any other wine region in Australia, so you will be spoiled for choice. We recommend Brokenwood, Peppertree and Tempus Two as some of our personal favourites. If you’re not already floating in heaven by the end of the day, finish your road trip with a romantic hot air balloon trip at sunset.

Northern Territory

• Litchfield National Park

Darwin is home to rugged landscapes, cascading waterfalls and pristine shorelines. It also attracts adventure-lovers, so this is one for the more daring couples among us. While Kakadu National Park is the first to spring to mind when thinking of the Northern Territory, we’ve chosen the less widely known, but easily accessible Litchfield National Park as our top romantic destination. Just 120 kilometres south-west of the city and a one-hour drive makes Litchfield National Park the perfect day trip – you definitely won’t want to miss Darwin’s world renowned burnt-orange sunset on a harbour cruise at dusk! But first things first, exploring the land of red dirt and ochre hues. Litchfield National Park boasts towering waterfalls, heavenly swimming holes and termite mounds taller than your rental car! Spend the day soaking in the magic of Wangi Falls, Florence Falls, Buley Rockhole and Tolmer Falls just to name a few.

South Australia

• Lake Bumbunga, Meningie

Here is a unique Valentine’s Day experience that is sure to impress! A 90-minute drive from our Adelaide Airport location, and on the road between Tailem Bend and Meningie, you will find Lake Bumbunga – the prettiest lake in Australia! Spring through to summer is the perfect time to visit the lake with the high water salinity spurning millions of betacarotene-producing micro-organisms to turn the lake into a gorgeous pink hue. Plan a pink-inspired picnic on the salt plains under a contrasting cobalt blue sky. It’s the ultimate place to pop the question and the photos will be one-in-a-million. A further drive east to the famed Clare Valley wine region for a coordinated rose in the afternoon is the ideal way to cap off a perfect, pink day!

• Cradle Mountain

What better way to spend Valentine’s Day than curled up on a sofa by the fireplace with a bottle of vino and your beloved? But first, we need to get you there. Pick up your hire car from our Launceston Airport location and make the two-hour 150-kilometre road trip to the ancient forest and alpine heaths of Cradle Mountain. Be sure to stop by the charming towns of Hagley and Westbury for lunch on the way or spend a couple of hours at the Ashgrove Cheese Factory. This is the home of Tasmanian Devils, Quolls, Echidna, Platypus and Wallabies and hiking the Overland Track at the base of Cradle Mountain is sure to bring you up close and personal with at least one or two of these fuzzy creatures. For a truly luxurious experience, spend the night in wilderness on the edge of Lake St Claire at the Cradle Mountain Lodge.

• Mornington Peninsula

Just a one-hour trip in your hire car from our Melbourne Airport location will bring you to the heart of the Mornington Peninsula. This region offers everything you could want in a road trip destination, whether just for a day trip or an entire weekend away. Starting with spectacular beaches and marine activities both above and below the water, to hiking, and gourmet food and wineries – this region truly has it all! We’ve chosen this locale for one spot in particular though, the Peninsula Hot Springs – the ultimate in romantic destinations. Spend an entire day here relaxing and soaking in one of seven inter-connecting natural hot pools until your fingers become more wrinkly than grapes hanging off the vine. Speaking of which, did we mention the Mornington Peninsula is also home to up to 200 vineyards and 50 cellar doors? After a lazy day soaking in mineral salts you and your sweetheart will need do rehydrate. Book yourself in at a boutique bed and breakfast among the vineyards with a bottle of red.

Western Australia

• Margaret River

Nestled in the corner of Western Australia is the Margaret River, and while there is a plethora of ‘road-tripping’ options in the area to choose from, there is one stretch of highway that echoes romance. First you will need to escape the city with the Margaret River a leisurely three-hour drive or 270 kilometres from the centre of Perth. Along the way you will take in some spectacular sights – this region is famed for its natural beauty and surf just as much as it is for its sensational wine. Bookending your road trip is Cape Naturaliste at the top and Cape Leeuwin at the bottom, both popular areas for hikers if you’re feeling adventurous. Stretching between these two points is Caves, a particularly magical hour and a half drive through wine country running parallel to the coast, but set inland. Choose from many pitstops along the way at various wineries and cheese factories. At the end you will find the towering 60-metre high trees of the Boranpu Karri Forest. Pull over and immerse yourself in the majesty of these beauties reaching towards the heavens, a testament to life and love eternal.
