This unique event showcases the diversity and highlights the power the sport has to unite the community and improve lives.
Over 1,000 participants took to the field in 2013 in over 300 matches, and organisers say they’re aiming to increase this number.
The 2014 event will be the fourth annual for the festival, and will bring together hundreds of participants.
Sections will be open for corporate and government agency teams as well as juniors. Homeless and disadvantaged players from the Community Street soccer program are also invited to play.
The Corporate Cup is a highlight of the festival and provides an opportunity for the business sector of Sydney to get out into the sunshine and battle it out on the field.
Teams in this Cup will be raising funds for the Community Street Soccer Program, which is a grassroots organisation that aims to change the direction and lives of homeless people in the area.
It allows players to get together in a non-threatening and safe environment, which then allows them to get fit and make new friends as well as seek support and advice.
Support staff work with participants and help them contact valuable services if they need to tackle issues such as homelessness, substance abuse, family breakdowns and mental illness, should that be applicable.
Players are provided with the tools necessary to turn their lives around, and has managed to help many people who have given up on traditional support systems and counselling services.
The Big Issue Street Football Festival will take place on Darling Harbour.
