Everyone has their favourite music to listen to in the car, but the automobile has also inspired some of the greatest songs of all time. Below are just a taste of the many glorious tunes dedicated to our fine, four-fendered friends.
I’m in Love with My Car, by Queen (1975)
Written by drummer Roger Taylor for this iconic rock band’s fourth studio album, “I’m in Love with My Car” is truly one of the best love songs to have hit the airwaves. Featuring such memorable lines as “Told my girl I’ll have to forget her / Rather buy me a new carburetor,” this beautiful rock ballad sums up mankind’s eternal devotion to our “four-wheeled friends” in Queen’s typical tongue-in-cheek style.
Mustang Sally, by Mack Rice (1965)
American singer Della Reese wanted a new Mustang. That, according to music historian Tom Shannon, was the inspiration for this classic R&B hit. It first became popular in 1966 when it was covered by Wilson Pickett, and just under 40 years later Rolling Stone claimed it was one of the 500 greatest songs of all time. Various versions have been released by myriad artists over the years, a clear indication that the world’s love of cars ain’t no passing craze.
Fun, Fun, Fun, by The Beach Boys (1964)
One of the canonical boy band’s greatest hits, composed by Brian Wilson and Mike Love, this catchy car tune centres on the illicit adventures of a teenage girl who borrows her father’s Thunderbird (or ‘T-Bird’ as it’s referred to in the song). It was first released on their fifth studio album Shut Down Volume 2, and inspired by actual events.
