Melbourne is known for its eclectic graffiti that lines its alleys and streets, so it may not come as a complete surprise that the city is now home to the top comic book store in the world.

This title was awarded to Melbourne's All Star Comics, so when you've driven to town in your Melbourne rental car, make sure you head there for your comic fix.

The Spirit of Comics Retailer Awards

All Star Comics on Lonsdale Street was given the title of top comic book store at the annual Eisner Awards, which could be called the Oscars of the comic book world.

It beat out around 36 other contenders for the much coveted title, and was awarded at the San Diego Comic Con.

It was set up by The Spirit creator Will Eisner as a way to acknowledge the role comic retailers play in nurturing the industry and the relationship between creators and readers.

What made All Star Comics stand out?

Finalists of this award could be nominated by their fan base, proving All Stars readers are a loyal bunch. Perhaps you will meet some like-minded souls when you are in town?

It has a real focus on its customers and regularly features in-store appearances from favourite authors. Guests have included Tom Taylor who helped pen DC Comics' Injustice: Gods Among Us and Earth 2 and Tristan Jones, who wrote and illustrated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Ghostbusters.

The store is run by Mitchell Davies and Troy Varker and was opened in early 2011.

"When we first opened the store, there was already a strong comic-creating community in and around Melbourne, and we embraced that," Mr Davies told The Music on July 29.

"Comic book readers want to feel like they're part of that picture," he said.

If you count yourself amongst this group, make sure you include All Stars on your itinerary when you are in Melbourne.
