Royal Adelaide Show

This iconic week-long festival is held each and every year in September, and attracts visitors from all over the country. Organised by the Royal Agricultural and Horticultural Society of South Australia, the Royal Adelaide Show is the state's biggest event – and it's fun for the whole family!

Exciting carnival rides and exhibitions, as well as examples of South Australia's best crafts and cookery can all be found here. And, for all you animal-lovers out there, a variety of world-class livestock will be present for you to peek at.

Taste local foods and Australian wine, dance the night away (well, until 11pm, at least) to a wide range of talented musicians and take your children to visit the adorable animals in the petting zoo.

This year's Royal Adelaide Show is being held from September 9 to 14 on Goodwood Road at the Adelaide Showground in Wayville. Make sure you hire a car in Adelaide so you can get there and have a great time!

South Australian Living Arts Festival

This almost month-long event is being held all over South Australia, so a rental car will definitely come in handy if you want to make sure you see it all. The South Australian Living Arts Festival, also known as SALA, is a state-wide celebration of the boundless artistic talent South Australia boasts.

Travel around the state, discovering and admiring the beautiful works of homegrown painters, sculptors, photographers and more. These will be displayed in a variety of traditional and not-so-traditional venues, including art galleries, restaurants and bars, and even some wineries.

Almost 5,000 artists are contributing this year, so there will be a whole heap of visual arts events for you to immerse yourself in.

The SALA begins on August 2 and runs until August 25. It is completely free to view these artworks, so why not treat yourself to a meal or glorious glass of wine while you're taking a look? We hear South Australia's food is even better than its art!

Word Adelaide

As the name suggests, Word Adelaide is all about celebrating words. The official South Australia website says this four-day festival provides all Australians with the opportunity to reflect on the power of words, and learn from and enjoy the way they are used by the various celebrities that will performing at this year's event.

The festival has once again been organised by Events South Australia, and will involve performance poetry and live storytelling. You can sit back and watch or add your own words into the mix – whatever floats your boat.

If you do want to stand in the spotlight, check out Yard Spinning with Kitty Flanagan. This will be held at the Governor Hindmarsh Hotel from 7.30pm on August 15, and gives you the chance to share your tales with the world.

Another not-to-be-missed performance, called In Their Own Words, will see Little Britain's Matt Lucas, Kitty Flanagan and Professor Roly Sussex discussing their craft in an off-the-cuff evening of comedy. You'll learn and you'll laugh – and you won't regret you came!

The festival runs from from August 15 to 18, and there are a mixture of both free and ticketed events available for you to attend.
