Fancy taking a road-trip in beautiful Australia? You’re in fine fictional company if you do. Many, many actors and actresses have crossed both their countries and our screens on numerous theatrical occasions. Here is a sampling of our favourite road-trip movies:
Little Miss Sunshine
In this 2006 comedy-drama, a dysfunctional family joins forces to get a little girl to a beauty pageant. Starring Australian actress Toni Collette alongside other big stars like Steve Carrell and Greg Kinnear, Little Miss Sunshine has a little something for everyone.
On their way from New Mexico to California, the family members become acquainted with each others’ small (or, in some cases, big) quirks and discover the importance of supporting the ones you love.
Planes, Trains and Automobiles
This 1987 film directed by the late, great John Hughes may be old, but it’s still hilarious. It chronicles the journey of Neal (Steve Martin) and Del (John Candy), two strangers who band together in an attempt to make it home in time for Thanksgiving.
They battle through bad weather, a motel robbery and an accidental rental car fire and come out as friends.
‘The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert’
This is, quite possibly, the best road-trip movie to have ever come out of Australia.
Released in 1994, this follows three drag queens as they make their way across the Simpson Desert to Alice Springs. Along the way they meet some friendly (and some not so friendly) characters, climb Kings Canyon and learn a lot about themselves and each other.
A must-see for all you Hugo Weaving fans out there!
