Australia’s Gold Coast is probably best known for its thrilling theme parks. However, there’s another, more artistic side to the city that may intrigue those who aren’t riveted by roller coasters. So, once you have your Gold Coast Airport car hire organised, we highly recommend heading over to all of these areas and appreciating some art!
Outdoor Sculptures
Today’s post was inspired by the “Animals With Attitude” sculpture trail currently on display in the Gold Coast. A bunch of Australia’s most talented artists have joined forces with John Cox, an academy-award winning sculptor, to make 21 colourful koala sculptures that are dotted around the city.
John Cox worked on the animatronic farmyard animals in ‘Babe’ (1993). He definitely knows what he’s doing – and these sculptures are definitely worth a look! So get down to the Gold Coast before April 28 and check them out.
The Gold Coast Wax Museum
If sculptures float your boat, then your next stop has to be this wonderful wax museum. It’s the largest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, and features over 110 wax statues of the rich and famous. Created by some of the best international sculptors, these wax effigies are incredibly – and sometimes creepily – lifelike.
There is also a Chamber of Horrors section, which displays (to those who dare visit) “a grim, staggering record of Human Cruelty throughout the ages”.
Gold Coast City Gallery
This is a staple of the art community and a must-see for artistic types heading to the Gold Coast. Almost incessantly home to world-class displays, the gallery showcases new and old artworks that capture the essence of this beautiful city in a fantastically chic setting.
For those who love a bit of contemporary Australian photography, the 2013 Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Photography Award exhibition is currently showing here.
