The Sound of Music on Stage

July 9-August 2, Musical Theatre

Richard Rodgers has adapted the 1965 movie into a wonderful musical, presented by The Gilbert and Sullivan Society of South Australia.

Trish Hart, with help Greg Hart, directs this story of the Von Trapp family. Trish and Greg Hart played Maria and George – the leading characters – in 2004, so they are very familiar with the story. These two, along with musical director Heather Elliot and choreographer Celeste Barone, are dedicated to making this a show to remember.

The story follows a nun, Maria, who becomes a governess for seven children. The family is wealthy, the father, George, a silent and brooding Austrian widower. Throughout this heart-warming tale, Maria gradually gains the love of both George and his children, opening them up to the joys of the world and music.

You'll have to resist the urge to join the cast as you hear all of your favourite tunes onstage. Don't worry, you can hum them to yourself on your way home.

Tickets are going fast, to be sure to pick yours up from The Gilbert and Sullivan Society of SA Inc. website.

The Australian Ballet Presents Cinderella

July 4-10, Adelaide Festival Centre

The classic tale of Cinderella is brought to life with the talents of the Australian Ballet. Alexei Ratmansky, once the artistic director of the Bolshoi Ballet, is now the primary choreographer for the American Ballet Theatre. It is he who has created this new version for The Australian Ballet that is sure to sweep you off your feet.

Classical music by Sergei Prokofiev creates a dreamy backdrop for the performance, and costumes and sets designed by Jerome Kaplan help to finish off the wondrous stage event. Nicolette Fraillon will bring her expertise as a conductor and the fantastic cast includes the likes of Lana Jones, Kevin Jackson, Adam Bull and Madeleine Eastoe.

The new story is set in a fantastical land in the 1940s, complete with total glam and even a few surprises. The ancient tale of the girl whose life changed completely is revived with a healthy dose of humour and pizzazz. Even those who are very familiar with the story may be surprised along the way as the story plays out.

The season is very limited, so be sure to select your seats as soon as possible on the Australian Ballet website.

Why not make your holiday extra special and book yourself in for each show? If you're worried about how you're going to get to the venues each night, a car hire in Adelaide makes transport easy.
