If we put together a list of all the places to visit during Autumn in Australia, we’d have you reading all day long. From coastal escapes, cosy café’s, day’s out on the hiking trails and scenic drives – Australia’s got it all. To save you a little bit of time we’ve carefully selected our top 3 Autumn destinations all within driving distance to a handful of our East Coast Car Rental locations that might just do the trick for your Autumn holiday’s.

First up: Sunshine Coast, Queensland

If you’re looking to extend the Summer sunshine, we’d recommend road tripping the coastline for a few days of pure relaxation on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. The combination of sunny skies and world class beach fronts create the perfect place to put your feet up and enjoy some R&R. The warm Queensland weather and pristine coastline makes it easy to enjoy your Autumn holiday outdoors; whether surfing, snorkelling, diving or kayaking.

When you decide to venture to the hinterland in your Sunshine Coast hire car, you’ll arrive at the historic Glass House Mountains – what once was a land of volcanic activity has now become one of Australia’s most iconic destinations for hikers and nature-lovers alike.  This nationally recognized mountain range is part of Australia’s National Heritage Register for it’s indigenous roots that date back thousands of years. To this day the Glass House Mountain Range is known as a very special meeting place for the Jinibara and Kabi Kabi people.

Suggested Hiking Trails:

Tribrogargan: An enjoyable 4KM/1.5 Hour loop around the Mountains base that’s perfect for families.

Ngungun: A technical 2.8KM/2 Hour summit trail that provides panoramic views of the hinterland and coastline.

Second: Adelaide, South Australia

The cooler weather and changing of colours makes Adelaide the place to be if you’re hunting for that true Autumn feeling, and make sure you bring your appetite. Adelaide’s CBD is home to many great eateries, markets, bars, and cafés.

There is something special about cosying up in a café with a warm cup of coffee after jumping on the tram spending the day exploring heart of Adelaide – we’d recommend 30 Acres located in the Adelaide’s city centre. It’s the perfect spot if you’re looking for warm pastries, a freshly baked loaf of sourdough and of course a flat white or two.

Adelaide’s also known to many as being the festival city, with their festival season kicking off at the beginning of March each year and running through to May. If you time things right you just might be able to visit one of Adelaide’s largest event’s, the world class Tasting Australia. A true celebration of eating and drinking, Tasting Australia showcases the very best SA has to offer, from April 29th – May 8th enjoy boutique beverage tastings and delicious fireside menus created by world-class chefs.

If none of those peak your interest, take a drive in your Adelaide car hire for a scenic drive up into the Hills of Adelaide to enjoy the pristine golden Autumn colours as they fill the valley unlike anywhere else in Australia. For a view that over looks the city and an enjoyable walk make your way to Chambers Gully Park – where you can enjoy a walk completely immersed autumn experience only a short drive from the city. Rumour has it, if you keep your eyes open just might spot a koala making its way through the park.

Adelaide Airport Car Rentals: Adelaide’s East Coast Car Rental branch is conveniently located only minutes away from the airport.

Third: Blue Mountains, NSW

Located just outside of Western Sydney, the Blue Mountains are a must-see destination during the Autumn months. The drop in temperature makes day’s spent hiking through the forest floors and mountain tops just that much more enjoyable. With a variety of hiking trails tailored to all experience levels you really can’t go wrong. The Blue Mountains is the perfect destination to take your Sydney car rental if you’re looking for a holiday to immerse yourself native flora, fauna, and local indigenous history.

Suggested Hiking Trails:

Katoomba Falls: Short, sweet and steep. Tailored for all ages this trail brings you right to the base of the rushing Katoomba Falls. Tip: pack a small picnic you can enjoy at the base of the falls before turning back.

Wentworth Falls: A challenging 5KM loop that descends through the rainforest weaving through waterfall after waterfall. Depending on the time of year you just might be able to enjoy a swim in the falls as you finish up your hike.

Grand Canyon Walk: This one’s our favorite – a 6KM walking track that’s great for families. This trail is engulfed by large sandstone rocks, and LUSH rainforest making for a truly unique hiking experience. Make sure you pack a little extra water and snakes for your trip.

Fancy a little something else? Hop in your hire car from Sydney for a scenic drive out to the Jenolan Caves and spend the day exploring Australia’s largest known caves. The ancient limestone caves are tucked away in the Blue Mountains National Park and home to many uniquely different caves. Enjoy experiences from the Temple of Baal – a 288 metre descent filled with crystal formations to the Imperial Cave – a 1007 metre descent to the base of the cave floor where you’ll find a running river bed and famous Australian Crystals.
