Australia’s east coast has a strong attraction for those travellers who are looking for a slice of adventure and excitement. Not only is the region home to some of the country’s most vibrant cities, it also features a plethora of heart-pumping experiences that are uniquely Australian and can’t be had anywhere else. Whether that’s the majestic Great Barrier Reef or the throbbing nightlife of Melbourne, there’s sure to be something new to discover.
When it comes to activities that really get the adrenaline rushing, very few cities can compete with Cairns. Widely regarded as the adventure capital of Australia, the city has more exciting opportunities than you can count, and a visit makes a great addition to any itinerary when visiting the country.
There’s so much to do in Cairns that it’s difficult to pick a few highlights. Nevertheless, here are three of the most exhilarating – and all are within driving distance of Cairns.

1. Bungy jumping
Bungy jumping is a huge attraction both in Australia and New Zealand, having been commercially pioneered in Oceania by Kiwi AJ Hackett in the 1980s. While New Zealand may have been the site of the first bungy, it is Cairns that can lay claim to having the best. Located 20 minutes from the CBD is the AJ Hackett bungy tower, a 50 metre tall jumper’s delight that features 16 different experiences.
The site was the first of its kind in the world, and remains the country’s only bungy tower. With high platform views out to the Great Barrier Reef and a thrilling descent through the bush, there’s nothing quite like taking a dive from the top. If you need any further convincing, Hackett himself regards the location as the world’s premier destination “for hanging out, having fun, meeting locals and getting a real bungy experience.”
2. White water rafting
If you’d prefer to stay at ground level, Cairns is also the place to be for white water rafting experiences. Whether you’re a speed demon or simply fancy cooling down in the splashing rivers, there’s an option for you. The closest rafting to the city can be found at the Barran River, but if you’re willing to drive a little longer, the Tully River is considered one of the best places in the world for a spot of aquatic adventure.
This journey takes you through the gorgeous World Heritage rainforest, and provides a nice counterpoint to the other water activities in Cairns.

3. Skydiving
If neither of these first two options sound quite death-defying enough for you, then perhaps skydiving fits the bill? Arguably one of the most thrilling activities that you can do, and a mainstay of many people’s bucket lists, skydiving is exhilarating no matter where you do it. Even so, taking a plunge through the air above Cairns offers an extra something special.
Considered to be amongst the most fortunate regions along the east coast when it comes to natural beauty, Cairns can crow about its lush forests, crystal clear waters and spectacular slice of the Great Barrier Reef. These different locations are, admittedly, amazing whichever way you look at them, but the view from 4,000 metres above sea level is something else entirely. The rush is unbelievable, and once you’ve got past the first few seconds of pure fear, you’ll be able to enjoy the spectacular view while you take the short journey back down to earth.
