Summer in Sydney means beach days, afternoons exploring the harbour and plenty of opportunities to venture beyond the city. But between deciding where to stay, how to get around and what to pack, there’s quite a bit of planning involved in making the most of your holiday. The trick is knowing when to leave the car behind and when having your own wheels makes life easier.
In this guide, we’ll share some simple tips for planning your Sydney summer trip, from choosing the right transport to organising day trips and booking your hire car.

Do you need a hire car for your Sydney holiday?
Well, it depends on what you’ve got planned! If you’re spending most of your time in the CBD, visiting the Sydney Opera House or catching a ferry across the harbour, public transport and walking will usually be your easiest options.
But if you’re travelling with the family, planning a few day trips or heading further along the coast, having a hire car will make getting around much easier.
Here’s what we recommend based on your holiday plans.
| Your holiday plans | Our recommendation |
|---|---|
| Exploring the CBD and harbour | Stick to walking, trains, buses and ferries. You’ll avoid city traffic and parking costs. |
| Sightseeing and day trips | Consider hiring a car for the days you’re heading beyond the city. |
| Travelling with family or friends | A hire car can make it easier to transport luggage, prams, and the whole group. Just make sure there’s enough room for everyone and their bags. |
| Exploring beyond Sydney | Hiring a car gives you more flexibility to explore at your own pace. Check your rental conditions before planning longer journeys. |
Our advice? Plan your city days and driving days separately. You’ll spend less time worrying about parking and more time enjoying the places you’ve come to see.
Make room for a day beyond the city
There’s plenty to see in Sydney itself, but there’s plenty worth exploring beyond the city. If you’ve got a spare day in your itinerary, hiring a car gives you the freedom to explore outside of the city without worrying about train timetables or organised tours.
Here are three day trips we think are worth adding to your Sydney summer holiday.
The Blue Mountains
Around 90 minutes west of Sydney, the Blue Mountains are perfect for nature lovers, families and anyone keen to swap the city for some fresh mountain air. Start with the famous Three Sisters at Echo Point, explore the walking trails around Wentworth Falls or stop for lunch in Leura.
Having a car makes it easier to visit different lookouts and towns throughout the day. Just remember to check walking track conditions before heading off, particularly during hot summer weather.
Royal National Park
If you’re after a mix of beaches and bushwalking, the Royal National Park is an easy escape south of Sydney. Pack a picnic, spend the morning on a coastal walking track or head to Wattamolla for a swim and a relaxing afternoon by the water.
The park has several entry points, so a hire car is handy for reaching different areas. Summer weekends can get particularly busy, with popular car parks filling early. Aim to arrive in the morning and check for park alerts before leaving.
The Central Coast
For a summer road trip with plenty of beach time, head north to the Central Coast. About 90 minutes from Sydney, it’s a great choice for families, couples, or groups of friends wanting a relaxed day by the beach.
Spend the morning swimming at Avoca Beach, enjoy lunch at a local cafe or explore the coastal towns around Terrigal. Having your own car makes it easy to explore the region, although you might want to stay overnight if you’re planning to visit several beaches. Allow extra time for traffic during the summer holidays.

Plan around your travel dates, not just “summer”
Sydney’s summer runs from December to February, but your experience can vary depending on when you visit. School holidays, major events and public holidays can all affect accommodation, transport and how far ahead you’ll need to plan.
Here’s what to keep in mind when choosing your travel dates.
| When you’re visiting | What to plan for |
|---|---|
| December | Christmas and New Year’s Eve can mean busy attractions and greater demand for accommodation and hire cars. Book key parts of your trip in advance, especially if you’re visiting during the festive period. |
| January | School holidays are in full swing, making this a popular time for family getaways. Check availability for activities, accommodation and car hire, particularly around the Australia Day public holiday. |
| February | With the summer school holidays generally over, February can be a good option if your dates are flexible. Check what’s happening during your visit, as major events can still affect crowds and availability. |
| March | Early autumn can still offer warm weather for sightseeing and coastal drives. Check the forecast and any events taking place before finalising your plans. |
Visiting for New Year’s Eve? Sydney’s fireworks celebrations require a little extra planning, particularly when it comes to getting around the city. Check out our Sydney New Year’s Eve transport guide for advice on public transport, driving and parking.
How early should you book a hire car for Sydney?
If you’re visiting Sydney over Christmas or New Year’s Eve, it’s worth organising your hire car well before you arrive. Demand can increase around major holidays, particularly for larger vehicles.
We looked at East Coast Car Rentals’ Sydney booking data from New Year’s Eve 2023 to 2025 to see how far in advance travellers booked, how vehicle availability changed, and how prices compared with quieter periods.
New Year’s Eve travellers book further ahead
Our booking data shows that travellers hiring a car over New Year’s Eve typically planned further ahead than customers travelling during an ordinary week.
ECCR Sydney New Year’s Eve booking insights, 2023–2025
That’s roughly four to six weeks before New Year’s Eve, compared with less than two weeks for regular travel periods. While there’s no magic booking deadline, leaving it until the last minute could mean fewer options, especially if you need a particular vehicle size for your family.

Earlier booking gives ECCR customers more vehicle choice
One of the biggest benefits of booking ahead is having a better selection of vehicles to choose from. This is important if you’re travelling with children, need extra luggage space or want a larger car for a group holiday. Across the wider Sydney car hire market, prices have also risen as New Year’s Eve approaches.
According to RateGain’s broader Sydney car hire market data, advertised rates for pickups between 26 and 31 December 2025 were approximately 25–40% cheaper when booked three weeks in advance than when booked in the final week.
That doesn’t mean booking early guarantees a cheaper rate with East Coast Car Rentals. For our customers, the biggest benefit is having more vehicles to choose from.
Allow for peak-period pricing in your budget
Holiday demand can also affect how much you’ll pay for a hire car. Across New Year’s Eve 2023 to 2025, East Coast Car Rentals’ average daily rental rates in Sydney were 37–43% higher than during the regular weeks used for comparison.
These figures reflect previous New Year’s Eve periods, rather than prices you should expect throughout the summer. Your actual rental cost will depend on your travel dates, vehicle choice and availability.
Choose a vehicle that fits everyone (and their bags)
A car might have enough seats for your whole family, but does it have room for everyone’s luggage? Before booking your Sydney hire car, think about what you’ll be bringing along and how you’ll be using it.
Here are a few things worth checking before choosing your vehicle.
| What to consider | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Passengers and luggage | Make sure there’s enough room for everyone, plus suitcases, backpacks and any extra bags you’re bringing. |
| Travelling with kids | Check child-seat requirements and allow space for prams, travel cots or other bulky items. |
| Day trips and road trips | Consider boot space and passenger comfort, especially if you’re planning longer drives outside Sydney. |
| City driving and parking | A smaller car may be easier to park and manoeuvre if you’re staying in the CBD or visiting busy areas. |
Why your vehicle choice matters during busy periods
Our Sydney New Year’s Eve booking data from 2023 to 2025 shows that some vehicle categories were particularly popular:
- People movers:
These were among the earliest vehicles booked, with 77% of New Year’s Eve bookings made by 1 November. - Large SUVs and 4WDs:
These vehicles were no longer appearing in ECCR’s comparison-site listings one week before New Year’s Eve 2025. - Small cars:
New Year’s Eve demand was equivalent to approximately 88% of ECCR’s small-car fleet.
If you need a vehicle with extra seats or luggage space, it’s worth checking availability once your travel dates are confirmed. And remember, booking a vehicle category doesn’t guarantee a particular make or model.
Sort out collection, parking and return before you arrive
You’ve booked your flights, found somewhere to stay and sorted your hire car. Now for a few practical details that’ll help you get on the road without any last-minute surprises.
If you’re booking Sydney Airport car hire with East Coast Car Rentals, here’s what to know before you arrive:
- Airport collection:
East Coast Car Rentals offers a free shuttle between Sydney Airport and its nearby Mascot depot. Once you’ve collected your luggage, call the Sydney branch on 1800 474 258 for directions to the shuttle pick-up point. - Collection times:
Check that your flight arrival and vehicle collection times line up with the branch’s opening hours, especially if you’re travelling over Christmas or New Year’s. - Accommodation parking:
Confirm whether your accommodation offers parking, what it costs and whether there are any vehicle height restrictions. - Toll roads:
East Coast Car Rentals vehicles come fitted with an e-Tag, so you won’t need to organise your own. Tolls are charged at cost, plus a small service fee. - Child seats and extras:
Baby seats, booster seats and other extras are available to add to your booking. Organise anything you need ahead of time. - Returning your car:
Allow enough time to return your vehicle to the Mascot depot, catch the airport shuttle and check in for your flight.
