Kununurra is the ideal base from which to explore the Kimberley. An Aboriginal word, meaning ‘big water’, it is a new town formed in 1958 as part of the Ord River Irrigation scheme, which is used to irrigate 75,000 hectares of land.

Since the creation of this large dam, the area has attracted thousands of species of wildlife and native birds. With the wet seasons come the pouring of millions of litres of water over high cliffs and creating spectacular waterfalls.

For great fishing tips and other areas of interest see the Kununurra Tourism website.
