Vast Landscapes and Unforgettable Journeys
Western Australia (WA) is the largest state in Australia, covering nearly one-third of the continent. With its wide-open roads, dramatic coastlines, and remote outback landscapes, WA offers some of the most iconic and adventurous road trip experiences in the country.
The state capital, Perth, is located on the banks of the Swan River and serves as the primary gateway to both the southwest wine regions and the northwest outback routes. Whether you’re planning a trip to Margaret River, Kalbarri, or the Pinnacles Desert, driving is the best way to explore this vast and varied state.
Driving Conditions and Safety in WA
Due to Western Australia’s size and diversity, driving conditions can range from modern highways to remote gravel roads with limited access. It’s essential to plan your route carefully and be prepared, particularly when heading into regional or remote areas.
Here are key considerations for driving in WA:
- Distances are long. Fuel stops can be hundreds of kilometres apart in regional and outback areas. Always refuel when you can and carry extra water and supplies.
- Mobile coverage is limited outside urban centres. A paper map or offline GPS can be helpful when navigating remote areas.
- Wildlife hazards are common, particularly kangaroos and emus on rural roads. Be cautious when driving early in the morning or after dark.
- Weather extremes can affect road safety. Cyclone season in the north (November to April) and heatwaves in summer can impact travel plans.
- Unsealed roads are common in national parks and remote locations. Check vehicle restrictions before travel and consider a 4WD for rough terrain.
- Speed limits are usually 50 km/h in built-up areas and 100–110 km/h on highways, unless otherwise signed.
- Fatigue is a serious risk on long journeys. Plan rest stops and switch drivers if possible.
