Explore Australia’s Most Iconic State

New South Wales is home to some of Australia’s most recognisable landmarks, diverse landscapes, and busiest road networks. As the most populous state in the country, NSW is often the first stop for international travellers. From Sydney’s famous Harbour Bridge and Opera House to the scenic coastal drives of the South Coast and the Blue Mountains’ winding mountain roads, New South Wales offers a driving experience like no other.

Whether you’re planning to explore the city, cruise up the Pacific Highway, or visit regional towns and national parks, having a solid understanding of local driving conditions will help you enjoy a safe and smooth journey.

Driving Conditions and Challenges in NSW

Driving in New South Wales is generally straightforward, but there are a few unique aspects to be aware of, especially in and around Sydney:

  • Sydney CBD traffic can be heavy and complex, especially during peak hours. Allow extra time and consider toll roads if you need to bypass congestion.
  • Toll roads are common in metropolitan areas including the M2, M5, M7, Cross City Tunnel and NorthConnex. Most tolls are cashless and require an electronic tag or pass.
  • Sydney Harbour Bridge and Harbour Tunnel both carry tolls and may have lane changes or height restrictions during peak traffic times.
  • Parking in the city is limited and expensive. Research off-street parking options or park-and-ride stations if you’re planning to visit central Sydney.
  • Regional roads can be long and isolated in western NSW, so ensure your vehicle is fuelled.
