Brief Adelaide History

The settlement of Adelaide was founded in 1836. It was named in honour of the German-born consort of King William IV, Queen Adelaide. The chosen area close to the River Torrens where it was originally inhabited by the Kaurna tribe, the city was designed by one of it's founding fathers, surveyor Colonel William Light. It was divided into the northern and southern districts with a vast 2300 acres of parklands surrounding it. The parklands were being utilised for recreational purpose and public gatherings. Being known as the "city of churches," early Adelaide was home to many religious refugees from Germany.
