If sporting events make you excited, Adelaide is where you should be this October. The city is hosting an array of exciting sporting events next month that are sure to be filled with energy and excitement.

2014 Australian Duathlon Championships

Do you love running and are fit as a fiddle? Sign up for the Australian Duathlon Championships. Taking place on Sunday October 19, this race consists of a 5km run, 20km bike ride and a 2.5km run through the city and the Adelaide hills. You can sign up online until Wednesday October 15 and there is a sign up fee that goes toward making the day and the race the best it can be. If you're looking for a fitness goal, this could be that boost you need to get out there and get fit.

If you're not an athlete, heading over to Adelaide when this race is taking place is still a great idea. The energy is palpable and you'll see the city in a whole new light.

2014 AFL Masters National Carnival

Beginning in 1980 and once known as Masters Australian Football and Superules Australia Inc, AFLM is now played by more than 200 teams throughout the country. This annual event is a big one for the sport 

From September 28-October 6, the AFL Masters National Carnival will take place. The suburb of Marion, at the Adelaide Westminster School, is where this event will take place – if you're staying in the city it is an easy drive to this location, so get yourself a rental car and head on over.

The club is a friendly location with a family atmosphere, so you'll feel welcomes right away. There are five divisions from every state and territory. The veteran team is made up of those that have been around since the beginning.

BUPA Sheffield Shield 2014

As Australia's domestic first-class cricket competition, this is an exciting event that cricket lovers should definitely check out. Throughout the course of the event, teams from the six states will compete against each other. 

The first round runs from October 31-November 3, with many matches happening in Adelaide. Catch the West End Redbacks take on the Queensland Bulls, NSW Blues and Commonwealth Bank Bushrangers on the Adelaide Oval.

Every team will play four day matches in a double round-robin series, both home and away. For each game points are awarded and then the final team will have an epic five day final to decide the winner.

HomeStart Operation Flinders Challenge

From October 11-October 12, starting at 7am at War Memorial Drive in Adelaide, this is another exciting chance to partake in a sporting activity. For teams and individuals, the endurance walking and running event takes participants to the River Torrens, Athelstone, into the hills and down the Yurrebilla and Heysen Trails.

These trails are known for being utterly beautiful, showcasing the stunning nature of outback Southern Australia. This is an exciting opportunity to see more of the area and experience the comradery of this sort of event.

If you sign up you can choose to cover 18, 34, 50 or 100km. If you're travelling with your mates, you can do the 100km as a relay with two, three or four people.

It costs $45 to sign up, with proceeds going to The Operation Flinders Foundation. This foundation specialises in helping young people. Youths are taken on eight day hikes into the Northern Flinders Ranges, encountering obstacles and discovering qualities of themselves they weren't aware of previously.
