Melbourne is the place to go to find fun for the whole family! It's a good idea to get your own set of wheels so you have the freedom to go where you want, when you want. Once you've sorted your rental car, check out these attractions:

Queen Victoria Market

Known amongst the locals as Vic Market or Queen Vic, this wonderful market that brings together art and food has been around for over a century, and now covers two blocks in the centre of the city.

The variety here is superb, with a stall for everything from fresh produce and gourmet taste delights to clothing, cosmetics and more.

There are a couple of featured traders that you should definitely stop by. ReWine is the place to go for Australian wine that is both affordable and high quality and Aminalee is where you'll find vintage inspired fashion and jewellery perfect for brides to be – these pieces are unique and chic.

This market is open Tuesday and Thursday – Sunday. The best time to check it out is morning and midday.

Melbourne Zoo

Here you and your kids will see more than 300 different animal species with origins spreading from Australia to the far corners of the globe. Highlights include Asian elephants, Sumatran tigers, koalas and gorillas.

The Trail of the Elephants is award-winning. This is the chance to learn about the endangered Asian elephant in the spacious surrounds. Mali was the first calf born in the zoo, she was welcomed into the world on January 16, 2010. Learn from the best and get a free guided tour from the volunteer guides.

Other highlights include the Butterfly House, Baboon Lookout, Wild Sea and Lemur Island.

This zoo is just a few minutes drive from the centre of the city, in the lush Royal Park. All you need to park your car for five hours is $2.

Eureka Skydeck

Eureka Skydeck is the highest viewing platform in the Southern Hemisphere, and the place to go to see the wonders of Melbourne. This is unlike anything else you've experienced, and is a great place to take the kids.

With 360 degree views and floor-to-ceiling windows, there is no where else quite like this, where you can see Melbourne in all its glory. Head out into the elements and view the city through binoculars on The Terrace.

Skydeck 88 has the special feature of a glass cube that extends outwards from the edge of the building by three metres and is known as The Edge. You'll feel suspended in the air, 300 metres above the ground.

The Skydeck is located on Riverside Quay on the South bank of the Yarra River. Wilson Car Park is right nearby and a great choice – on the weekends it costs $6.
