Tasmania is the state that often gets forgotten about as a choice of holiday destination. Although one of the smallest of the bunch, it’s about the same size as Ireland and has an abundance of activities, fantastic food and stunning vistas to fill your time.

With your vehicle hire sorted with the team at East Coast Car Rentals Hobart, you’re probably wondering where to head to first. Luckily for you, we’ve created this handy itinerary full of must visit places in Tasmania.

1. Hobart

Not only is Hobart the capital of Tasmania and the place you’ll collect your car rental, it’s also where you’ll begin your epic road trip. Don’t be too hasty and leave in a hurry as Hobart is a city full of character, charm and culture. Tasmania is famed for its thriving art scene and Hobart is certainly at its heart. Find boutique shops, art galleries and a fascinating array of art deco buildings from the 1920s.

2. Coles Bay

Heading two and a half hours north up the east coast will lead you to Coles Bay. En route, stop off at the historical town of Richmond – home to Australia’s oldest bridge – before making your way through the balmy beach towns of Orford and Swansea and further onto Coles Bay.

Upon reaching your first road trip destination, discover unspoilt views of the pink-coloured mountainous peaks, more commonly known as The Hazards which lie in Freycinet National Park. Spend time kayaking, beach hopping and exploring the lush landscapes before making your way to Freycinet Peninsula.

3. Freycinet Peninsula

A complete must visit is that of the Freycinet National Park. Comprising of uninterrupted beaches, endless walking trails and the world famous pink-tipped mountain range, The Hazards, there’s plenty to see and do here.

Freycinet Peninsula is also famous for its wallaby spotting opportunities along with the picture-perfect Wineglass Bay. The curved inlet of white sand is bordered by bright blue, clear waters which makes for an outstanding photograph from the highly recommended lookout point.

4. Bay of Fires

Continuing a further two hours north up the east coast of Tasmania will bring you to the Bay of Fires region. Spanning 50 km from Binalong Bay to Eddystone Point, explore this beautiful part of the state in the luxury of your car rental, stopping off at pristine beaches along the way.

As the name suggests, the Bay of Fires consists of orange-coloured granite formations which make for incredible photographs. It’s also a great place to take a dip, as the waters are extremely safe, clear and calm.

5. Cradle Mountain

En route to Cradle Mountain, be sure to stop off at one of Tasmania’s most popular cities, Launceston. It’s a great place to grab a bite to eat, stretch your legs and wander through the lush gardens and parks, before hopping back in your rental vehicle to continue your road trip.

The Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park is home to serene lakes and rugged mountain scenery and of course, the iconic Cradle Mountain itself. Hike one of the many walking tracks and keep an eye out for the residing wallabies!
