Gold Coast Airport, formerly known as the Coolangatta Airport, is based on the southern end of the greater area. In recent years, the airport has expanded from only servicing Domestic flights to now boasting an International Terminal. Since the demise of Ansett Airlines and the subsequent introduction of Virgin Blue and Jetstar (Qantas Airlines low cost carrier) the terminal has been redeveloped and in 2007 an extension of the runway has also commenced.
The Airport has also attracted new International Airlines. In addition to Freedom Air and Virgin Pacific, it was recently announced that Tiger Airways and Air Asia X have now also chosen the Coast as the entry and exit port into and out of Australia. With both new Airlines being 'budget carriers' the Airport now not only attracts more foreign visitors but also is becoming the departure point for those Australians living in other states who are traveling overseas, particularly to Asia.
