Driving in Wagga Wagga

Wagga Wagga is located approximately half way between Sydney and Melbourne. It is an important centre for transport, military, education and agriculture and has a population of 46,000 residents.

Founded on the banks of the Murrumbidgee River, initially the produce from the land made up the majority of the first industries, utilising wagons, then river boats to export the food from the area, until the railways arrived in 1878

The town 'bumbled' along for many years, hampered by hard times and the salinity in the soils of the area. In 1941 the Royal Australian Air Force opened two bases there and the Army established a training camp the following year. this breathed some new life into the region, that has been sustained from then until this day. One other little known fact about the City is that it is the seat of a Roman Catholic diocese in Australia.
