Taree lies on the Mid-North coast of New South Wales, about three and a half hours drive north of Sydney central. It is located on the Manning River in the centre of the Manning Valley. The greater area includes sea-side towns as well as smaller communities, nestled in the Hinterland.
The Manning River has two entrances, with one at Old Bar and the other at Harrington. This makes it Australia's only double delta. Like much of the Northern NSW coast, the area was founded on the timber trade and the water ways provided excellent transport options. Today, the river still plays an important part in the commerce of the area.
As tourism has become more popular, the local council has imposed compulsory recreational fishing licence's, to ensure that fish stocks are maintained and the natural resource protected.
