Driving in Port Pirie

Port Pirie lies 224 kilometres north of Adelaide in an inlet on the Eastern edge of Spencer Gulf. It is home to the worlds largest lead smelter which is operated by Nyrstar. As well as the refinery the port also has large Silos to hold different grains awaiting transportation out of the region.

The original name for this area was 'Tarparrie', which it is guessed to mean "Muddy Creek". A well dredged channel allows access to the large ships that carry in the raw materials and export the completed product. In addition to the port access, the Great Southern Railway links the town with Adelaide in the South and Whyalla in the North.
