Driving in Port Augusta

Port Augusta is located at the Head of the Spence Gulf, near the renowned Flinders ranges. Described as the crossroad of Australia, it is a key stop for road and train travel that crosses the continent as well as the Southern gateway for main roads leading into the Northern Territory.

The area was originally explored by Matthew Flinders, as he wanted to find a sailable river system that would allow him to travel into the core of the country, hopefully to find an inland sea. As stated on the Nullarbor Net website, "Flinders was disappointed on both counts, there was an inland sea but it dried up about 120 million years ago".

The Great Southern Railway, that was finally completed in 2004 and links Adelaide, via Alice Springs through to Darwin in the North, passes through Port Augusta as does the track from Sydney to Perth. Visitors to the town might be fortunate enough to catch the Indian Pacific or The Ghan train services passing through, as the both do twice weekly.
