About Mt Warning


Mount Warning lies just over the Queensland border in New South Wales, just north of Murwillumbah in the Tweed Coast Hinterland. This peak is actually the first place in mainland Australia to be touched by the sun each morning.

The climb to the summit is popular with visitors and although only 8.8km return trip, walkers should allow approximately two hours each way as the gradient of the slopes will require most to stop for a rest in the areas scattered along the track.

20 million years ago Mt Warning used to be the core magma centre of of a huge 4,000 square kilometre volcano that stood twice as tall as it currently does. In 1966 it was declared a National Park and reserved for public recreation.
