The history of Monto is similar in many ways to much of inland Queensland. In the late 1800's the discovery of gold saw those seeking to make a fortune fossicking arrive in the area, but with little luck and inconsistent finds many left within a few short years, returning the population to just 4 people.
One of the twists of fate for Monto was that in the 1870's the area became infested with Spear Grass and so the stocks of Sheep were replaced with cattle. A change that has stayed until current day with the region producing millions of litres of milk each year as well as butter and other dairy products.
Monto was also the first Queensland town to be built using town planning techniques when it was gazetted in 1924.
