Located 1181km North/West of Brisbane and 1767km South/West of Cairns, it is not unfair to call Longreach a remote outback town. The town has a great sense of humour about their life style with references to the 'Aussie Wave' (swatting the constant attach of flies from ones face) and the endless acres of grass plains, which are either lush green or dusty brown ... depending on how long it has been since the last rains.
Recognised in 1860 as promising land for grazing cattle, the region has continued with this industry through to present day. Although gazetted in 1887 it was not until 1892 that the population began to grow and create the need for a Post Office, Police Station, State School and Churches.
