Driving in Katherine

The Katherine Region, to give you an idea of its size, has almost the same land mass as the entire State of Victoria. The main town is located 312km from Darwin and almost one third of the 17,000 population are indigenous.

Because of it's location, Katherine is often referred to as the 'Crossroads of the North' and it allows easy access to the Nitmiluk National Park, which is home to the Katherine George and the Edith (Leilyn) Falls.

Tourists need to plan visits to the area to avoid the wet seasons, where river levels can rise up to 18 metres, making much of the place a 'no go' zone. Shortly after the monsoonal rains, the region bursts into colour with the blossoms of new growth and green grasses.
