Situated in the middle of Kakadu National Park, the town was initially established to service the Ranger mine. Jabiru is best known by Australians for the many enviromental protests that have occured over the mining, that see activist chaining themselfs to trees and bulldozers.
The land is traditionally owned by the Mirrar Aboriiginals and is also the gateway to Arnhem Land, notable for its Aboriginal rock-art. The town has a variety of accommodation and tourist facilities and activities including fishing and camping.
