With origins as far back as 1935, Grafton is the home of Australia's longest running floral show, the Jacaranda Festival. Looking at the streets of the town in spring, it is easy to see why, as they blossom with majestic purple flowers.
Despite the initial settlers to the area wanting chop down trees, mainly Cedar, by-laws were established in those early days to plan and preserve such trees as the Jacarandas, almost ironically.
Today, visitors to Grafton will find it bursting with arts and crafts, although expect many of the stores and galleries to close up shop early during the month of July as the Racing Carnival comes to town.
