Ballina lies at the mouth of the Richmond River, on New South Wales' far north coast. It is actually on a sand Island that is just inside the heads of the river.
The calm waters of the river make it very much a part of the commercial endeavors for the region. Historically sugar cane, other food crops and timbers were easily transported around the area on large flat-bottomed barges.
The river is also popular with recreational users and sporting events. For those wanting a little more 'splash' when getting wet, 32km of ocean beach ensure big waves and refreshing clean water.
