It is estimated, through the discoveries in Archaeological sites, that the Indigenous people of Australia, the Aborigines, lived in what we now call Queensland some 30,000 years ago. It wasn't however until 1606 that the Dutchman, Willem Jansz, first landed on the Cape York Peninsular and continued on to explore the Gulf of Carpentaria. Almost 200 years later, the penal colonies were established in Brisbane and not until the early 19th Centaury was land made available for sale and the settlement of the residential population really began to grow.
On 1 January 1901, the majority of Queenslanders voted 'yes' to a referendum asking whether Queensland should join the Federation. Once this referendum was passed, Queensland lost its colonial status and became a State. This enabled the Queensland Government to make policy and legislation and with the fresh innovation laid the path for Queensland today having one of the strongest economies in Australia. The State continues to prosper through agriculture, mining and more recently, tourism.
