Summer is a great time to visit the city of the north. The weather is warm – average temperatures range from 23.6 to 31.4 degrees Celsius – and most of the annual rainfall for the region falls during this season. It’s hot and it’s wet – perfect conditions for some of the things on this list. So, get your car hire in Cairns sorted and jump on the road!

See the Great Barrier Reef

The absolutely unbeatable feature of Cairns is the Great Barrier Reef. One of the seven natural wonders of the world, no visit is complete without seeing this magnificent coral structure. A number of companies offer cruises, but to really experience the reef in its full glory, you’ll want to go scuba diving.

Quicksilver offers a tour package that includes not only a cruise, but the optional extra of scuba diving for beginners. This has the advantage of teaching you everything you need to know for your first dive. Quicksilver’s highly qualified instructors will be on hand to show you all the ropes.

Go jungle surfing

While not in Cairns itself, we think jungle surfing is worth the three-hour drive north. Cape Tribulation’s Daintree Rainforest is home to many zipline tour companies, one of which is Jungle Surfing Canopy Tours. Their set-up features a series of platforms, connected by zipline cables.

Once you’re all connected, you’ll be flying through the jungle like Tarzan in no time. Their rig also has a nifty way to get up to the first platform – a human hamster wheel.

The maximum number of people on a tour is 13, so there’s plenty of room for a large group of family and friends.

Raft on the Tully River

If you’re up for something a little more adventurous, you can’t go wrong with white water rafting on the Tully river. Featuring grade 3-4 rapids (medium difficulty), it’s an absolutely legit place to go rafting – the river was recently announced as the spot for the 2019 IRF World Rafting Championships.

Raging Thunder Adventures offers a meaty barbecue lunch in their package – a fantastic reason to go with them, we think.

There you have it – three great reasons to give Cairns a visit this summer. As ever, if you’re considering a road trip, be sure to book your car hire in Cairns with East Coast Car Rentals.
