3 of the best things to do in Auckland this December

Experience all Auckland has to offer with a rental car.

Summer is finally here, the sun is out, it's the perfect temperature to head to the beach, and the beautiful city of Auckland is pumping with the holiday spirit. What more could you want from a tourist destination? There are plenty of Auckland road trips to experience in your rental car, and even a few local delights to partake in.

Whether you love great food and drink, sitting in the sun all day and catching some waves, or watching a show at night, the three activities below are sure to please any visitor to New Zealand's largest city.

1. Shakespeare's Pop-up Globe in Ellerslie

The joy of Shakespearean theatre is hard to beat – especially when it's inside a replica of the stage designed by the great wordsmith himself. Over two seasons, the Pop-up Globe in Auckland has welcomed over 200,000 people, treating them to first-class performances and entertainment unlike anything else.

The latest season launches on December 7, and there are five plays to choose from – more than ever before:

  • A Midsummer Night's Dream,
  • The Merchant of Venice,
  • Macbeth,
  • The Comedy of Errors, and
  • Julius Caesar.

If you're a fan of Shakespeare, or you'd like to be, there's no better way to enjoy a night out in Auckland.

2. Lunch at the Hallertau Brewery

The Hallertau Brewery in Riverhead is only an hour northwest of Auckland, and is home to some of the best beers and tastiest food in the country. The beautiful drive will allow you to see more of Auckland than you otherwise could, plus you can enjoy the hottest part of the day sipping a tasty brew in the famed Biergarten.

A whopping 18 beers are complemented by an extensive (and drool-worthy) menu, often accompanied by live music in this fabulous setting. Take the drive, but make sure you have a sober driver!

3. A visit to Muriwai

Muriwai is one of Auckland's famous black sand beaches, and is a sight to behold. The rolling waves and stunning shoreline are rugged, and the 2,400 gannets that nest in the area from August to March make for some amazing photo opportunities.

The drive from Auckland Central takes about 45 minutes, and you could easily spend a whole day at the beach. Learn to surf, read a book, take a stroll along the boardwalk or sit at a nearby cafe and enjoy the fresh air. We couldn't think of a better way to spend a beautiful summer's day!

There's so much to do in summer around Auckland, and having your own transport is essential to make the most of your time. For more information about car hire in Auckland, contact East Coast Car Rentals today.
